- Sub: RE: MacApp & System 7
-
- Dear Howard,
-
- I too have been wondering about how to be ready with a System 7.0 app on time
- while using MacApp 2.0. While at the WWDC I asked Lonnie Millet about what
- hints he could give us MacAppers regarding AppleEvents, etc… He told me that a
- good place to start was the AppleEvents sample program on the 7.0a9 CD. Take a
- look at the modified version of DemoText that is found in the AppleEvents
- Samples folder, inside the AppleEvents folder, inside the Late-Breaking News
- folder. (Yeah, it took me awhile to find it too!) Remember that this sample is
- just one possible approach, not a prerelease version of 2.1.
-
- At the MacApp feedback forum at the WWDC, your first question was addressed
- somewhat. My coworker, John MacVeigh, asked whether there would be support in
- ViewEdit for the Help manager. There was no direct answer from the MacApp team,
- but it was noted that this was a good idea. Also at the same feedback forum,
- Steve Friedrich asked if developers would be willing to accept a MacApp that
- only supported system 7.0. No one agreed! However, Steve did say that at some
- point they will have to stop supporting some old systems. (I can't remember
- exactly which systems he mentioned, can anyone else remember?)
-
- >If you are going to offer really good use of System 7, then you are virtually
- >going to have to have a great deal of new code to do so, and it is thus more
- >efficient to have two separate versions of your application.
- I agree with this point. You're right that anyone who wishes to stay with
- system 6 is probably going to be upset by the large size of an application due
- to all the code to support system 7. We are wrestling with this dilemma
- ourselves and it looks like we're going to do a system 7 application only.
-
- I leave you excited yet confused about System 7,
-
